When to say f*ck it

why and how

Let’s turn back the clock

I was 4 months into my first SDR role

Wake up at 5, into the office at 5:30, eat hardboiled eggs from the office fridge + sunchips and a Celsius for breakfast

I took solace from the stress of life in cold calling

Converting a cold call with a CRO of a public company from “im not interested” to “when can we meet” in an account no other SDR broke into felt otherworldy

It felt powerful

But that power becomes tiresome when there isn’t a revenue dollar associated with it

It feels like a false metric at first

Imagine being overweight (I don’t have to imagine haha - currently working on this) and working out 8 hours a day to lose zero body fat

I needed my first closed won, I wanted it so badly.

Thought about it while I was dialing, everyone was dialing around me - the regular office buzz and smell of coffee instilling a chill of excitement every time I hit dial

Then I heard the Vp of Sales of the account I’ve been chasing for the past month pickup - it caught me off guard

With a voice crack and a stutter.. I referenced my emails I sent him and the research I did based on how we’re helping their competitor

His response? “Don’t f*cking call me again” and click - (he hung up)

I was pissed, everything I did was for the investors

All the account research, all the cold call practice, all the times I stared at his LinkedIn profile while calling him 20 times from the same phone number.

FOR NOTHING

I stood up. slammed the desk and said “F*ck it” real loud. When I say real loud, i mean louder than your VP of sales churning AWS Loud

(thankfully my manager wasn’t in the office yet and HR could go do one for all I care)

My mind started racing - how can I fix this, how can I not sound like an idiot getting off a train for the first time with spilt coffee all over my white shirt

So I said “F*ck it” again (this time in my head) - went directly into Sales Nav

Went straight to decision makers, found their CRO (his boss) and hit dial - all within less than 10 seconds.

2 rings and PICKUP - (my hearts pounding, what did I get myself into here? I already said F*ck it so what’s the worst that could happen?)

I shot my shot, and I shot it hard, I spoke to him like he was a toddler with the same tone of voice I speak to someone who’s speeding in our neighborhood - and that CRO ate it up

Respected that I took the time to research, and that I was a “straight shooter” + it was one of the best cold calls “I’ve ever gotten”

2 learning lessons here

  1. Learn how to say F*ck it, your actions change and your demeanor change

  2. Write down lessons from saying F*ck it - I took that same tonality and attitude towards every C suite I spoke to afterwards

The cherry on top of the Sundae?

The CRO put that same VP who told me to never call him again, on the initial demo and I got to sit there and give my intro to that VP

The cherry on top of that Cherry?

First Sourced deal as an SDR. Get F*cked

Not my typical post today - decided I needed to rant and used this as my outlet because I remembered this when I was in the shower

Buckle up - next week’s post (was supposed to be this week) includes lesson from the Goat Chef Brandon Jeppson who’s selling to HR

Stay tuned

Stay thirsty

Stay on the front lines my friend
